The Music

Come join us at 7:30PM on September 18, 2015 at the Attucks Theatre for a screening of African American pioneer filmmaker Oscar Micheaux’s Within Our Gates (1920) accompanied by a live musical performance of a film score written by Adolphus Hailstork and featuring the Harlem Quartet and guests with members of The I. Sherman Greene Chorale directed by guest conductor Michael Morgan. An encore performance will take place on September 21st at 8PM at Chandler Recital Hall.

Come to the Attucks to interact with a multigenerational panel of African American filmmakers and producers engaging in an open Q&A with the audience on the challenges of telling compelling Black American stories. Moderated by film critic Mike Sargent, the panel features Melvin Van Peebles, Tim Reid, Zeinabu Irene Davis and Michael Swanson. On September 21, there will be a discussion at Chandler Hall with Adolphus Hailstork and Derrick Borte.

Come see the world debut of Our Nation, a short fiction film about the Hampton Roads response to Birth of a Nation. Directed by Derrick Borte, written by David P. Mallin, starring Connor Berry and Marsha Stephanie Blake, and produced by the ODU film program. An encore performance will take place on September 21st at 8PM at Chandler Recital Hall.
